Gravity

I watched gravity the other day,I had to.Someone called me stupid in am euphemism the other day for saying I don’t get sci-fi,I therefore decided to watch it and get over the hype, and prove to them that number one  am not stupid and number two sci-fi is unbelievably twisted.(and kinda stupid, have me arrested!)
For  those of you who have not had a chance to watch it,it’s a 3D space drama film about two astronauts who survive the mid orbit destruction of a space shuttle and attempt to return back to earth. The two astronauts are played by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.
I patiently watched it waiting for that one scene that would change my views about sci-fi.I needed convincing, and I got it,to never watch any other sci-fi movie.
So here is the thing,in the kind of movies that I like, the twists turns and ends are sometimes unexpected but they are believable. Case and point,in Best Man Holiday, when Mia gets cancer,we all  root for her to get better but she doesn’t,after cuddling for the last time with her husband, she dies, that is unexpected but believable.
In gravity, the unexpected and unbelievable happened, when Dr Ryan Stone(Sandra) realizes that she is stuck as the craft thrusters have no fuel, she resigns herself to a painless suicide by shutting down the oxygen supply cabin. As she begins losing consciousness,Kowalski(Clooney) appears outside and enters the capsule/aircraft/that thing, scolds her for giving up and tells her to use some thingmajig  landing rockets to propel the capsule towards Tiangong a Chinese space station,Mind you Kowalski had already detached himself from the tether to save her from drifting away with him, so we can assume he dies.Ryan realizes that Kowalski’s re-appearance was not real but  just a dream, she gets new  strength and new will, restores the oxygen and does everything she can to return back to earth and we all know the ending.
That ending convinced  me that sci-fi is even unreal than I thought it would be.If it were real, why don’t we all go to bed and we will get a nudge from our  guardian angels, directing us on what path to  take?I mean,if I could go to bed and my mother in a dream  tells me what to do then am a believer!
A guy running to the airport, beating bad traffic and really bad snow to tell his neighbor that he is in love with  her seems more believable to me.(That is from the movie baggage claim)
A guy standing outside his girlfriend’s house, holding a boombox over his head blaring a romantic song seems doable to me.
My beef is,if you are going to try to get into my head and play with my imagination, make it believable.I know I will get some tech insults from geeks all over but hey, this are my views and everybody is entitled to their own opinion.I would like to hear yours! You know what to do!

  1. Wooii …Jyokiviyella,

What can I say? You write so well and I am always laughing or stunned in silent horror as I read your wonderful tales. Today you have totally ruined the film for me. 😦 I had planned to take the kids on New Year’s to watch a nice Sci-fi plot. I guess they’ll just stay home and pull the weeds from the drive-way now. 🙂

A Happy and prosperous New Year to you and all your esteemed readers
